They provide key temperature regulation, reduce noise and air pollution, and significantly support the physical health and social well-being of residents. Despite these<!--more--> Despite its undeniable benefits, rapid and relentless urbanization often leads to the destruction and loss of these vital spaces. The European Union (EU) has seen massive population shifts in recent decades, with around 73% of its population now living in urban areas, which is even higher than the global average. This expansion, coupled with the loss of green space, is deepening socio-economic inequalities in who has real access to urban nature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concept 3-30-300: A new standard for cities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to better monitor and improve the state of greenery, a new concept was introduced in 2023 by renowned expert Konijnendijk \u2013 <strong>rule 3-30-300<\/strong>. This rule represents universal goals for cities and consists of three simple and memorable pillars:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Every resident should have from their home, workplace or school <strong>view of at least 3 trees<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Every residential area should have <strong>at least 30 % tree canopy cover<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Every resident should have a maximum distance of <strong>300 meters walking access to public park<\/strong> or a green area (ideally with an area of at least 1 hectare).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The aim of this rule is to ensure that urban forests and nature penetrate our everyday environment and contribute to the creation of &quot;biophilic&quot; and, above all, climate-resilient cities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the reality in Europe? Alarming results of the study<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A recent large-scale and technologically innovative study assessed compliance with this rule across 862 European cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. The analysis, which used tree data from high-resolution satellite imagery (PlanetScope) and spatial building models, yielded some shocking findings.<\/p>\n<p>It was found that <strong>less than 15 % (more precisely 13.5 %) of the total studied population live in full compliance with all three criteria of this rule<\/strong>. Up to 21% of the urban population even lives in areas that do not meet the <strong>not one<\/strong> of the three conditions of the 3-30-300 rule. In total, 56 % residents of the analyzed cities live in locations where at most one condition is met. Interestingly, only two cities \u2013 Espoo in Finland and Varese in Italy \u2013 managed to meet all three rules for more than half of their residents.<\/p>\n<p>A detailed look at the individual criteria shows huge geographical differences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rule of 3 trees:<\/strong> On average, 46.7 % inhabitants meet this requirement. While in Berlin or Lugano, Switzerland, this requirement is met by more than 70 % people, southern European cities (e.g. in Spain, southern Italy and Greece) show access for less than 10 % inhabitants.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rule 30 % Coverage:<\/strong> This is <strong>the biggest stumbling block for the vast majority of European cities<\/strong>. Only around 28% of the population lives in neighbourhoods with such a density of trees, which is the main reason for the low overall success rate. While Nordic cities like Stockholm and Warsaw excel, one in three European cities has less than a tenth of its population in such green neighbourhoods.<\/li>\n<li><strong>300 meter rule:<\/strong> Distance to a park is best met \u2013 57% of city residents have access to it. However, here too, Southeastern Europe lags behind due to a smaller share of public green spaces over 1 hectare compared to cities like Helsinki or Hastings in the UK.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Green gentrification: Nature as a luxury for the rich?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The study&#039;s conclusions point to a serious problem - strong wealth inequalities. <strong>Higher levels of urban green space are systematically associated with wealthier estates and neighborhoods<\/strong>. Cities with higher gross domestic product (GDP) per capita often provide demonstrably more green space. Large-scale, high-resolution analysis in countries such as France, Belgium and Spain confirmed that people with higher disposable income are significantly more likely to live in greener urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>Such \u201egreen gentrification\u201c means that greening projects often unintentionally lead to higher property prices and the displacement of low-income residents to the periphery, where they no longer have access to nature. In addition to the economy, climate also plays a key role. Cities in wetter environments (especially central and northern Europe) have better natural conditions for vegetation growth, which makes them better suited to environmental parameters than arid, southern cities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why are we lagging behind and what are the solutions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reason for the current crisis in the availability of green space is the poor dynamics of urban growth. Over the past decade (2010-2020), Europe&#039;s urban population has grown by 16 % and the built-up area of cities has increased by 2.3 %. However, the number of trees has not increased proportionally - on the contrary, <strong>tree crown density recorded a slight decrease (-1.6 %)<\/strong>. Without decisive steps in spatial planning, there is a risk of further thinning of our contact with nature.<\/p>\n<p>How to reverse this trend? The solution is mainly <strong>transformation of urban mobility and implementation of the 15-minute cities concept<\/strong>. This approach minimizes dependence on private vehicles and promotes walking and cycling, freeing up valuable space taken up by roads and parking lots and converting it into parks. According to scientists, natural walking in a natural environment has an excellent effect on reducing stress levels and improving overall psychological well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Achieving a 30% tree canopy share in dense urban areas solely through street planting is often unrealistic. Cities must therefore adopt extensive greening of buildings themselves (through green roofs and facades) and systematically support planting programs on private land or in suburban forests. In overcrowded centers, so-called \u201epocket-sized parks\u201c should be created, which do not stand out in terms of size, but contain enough trees and can also be built on residual building plots.<\/p>\n<p>Urban greening is not just a cosmetic issue, but also an existential one. For example, increasing tree cover to 30 % could cool European cities by an average of 0.4\u00b0C, significantly reducing summer mortality due to urban heat island effects. EU legislative frameworks, such as the binding Nature Restoration Regulation, already oblige cities to prevent any loss of green space by 2030 and to continue to increase it thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>Extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-026-71523-8_reference.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">analysis<\/span><\/a> shows that <strong>we need a change in priorities in urban planning<\/strong>. Future ecological urban renewal must be guided by a strong emphasis on social justice. It is necessary to ensure that the benefits of shade, clean air and the presence of parks are not just the privilege of those who can afford them, but that they constitute an absolute foundation for every inhabitant of the modern city. <em><strong>JRi&amp;CO2AI\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Urban green spaces are a fundamental pillar for sustainable and healthy urban life.
