EU legislative framework: CRCF framework and quality standards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The basis for decarbonisation in the EU is <strong>Regulation (EU) 2024\/3012 (CRCF)<\/strong>, which introduces a voluntary certification system for permanent carbon removal and carbon agriculture.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>QUALITY Criteria:<\/strong> Each project must demonstrate accurate <strong>quantification<\/strong> net benefit, <strong>complementarity<\/strong> (activity beyond the scope of the law), <strong>long-term storage<\/strong> and overall <strong>sustainability<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biochar stability:<\/strong> To be recognized as a permanent carbon sink, biochar must be produced by pyrolysis at temperatures <strong>above 350 \u00b0C<\/strong> (for feeds above 500 \u00b0C) and show the molar ratio <strong>H\/Corg below 0.7<\/strong>, which guarantees carbon storage on <strong>at least 200 years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>EBC certification:<\/strong> International standard <strong>European Biochar Certificate<\/strong> defines strict limits for contaminants such as PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and heavy metals to ensure safety for the soil and the food chain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Potential of biological raw materials in Slovakia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Slovakia with forest cover <strong>41,4 %<\/strong> has enormous biomass potential, especially due to increasing climate damage.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Calamitous wood:<\/strong> The share of accidental (calamitous) mining in Slovakia has historically ranged between <strong>35 % and 65 %<\/strong>. In 2024, only in the Horehronie area, approx. <strong>1.25 million m\u00b3<\/strong> calamity matter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Quantitative estimate:<\/strong> With a total annual production of approx. <strong>7.2 million m\u00b3<\/strong> represents low-quality and disaster-damaged wood volume <strong>2.5 \u2013 3.6 million m\u00b3\/year<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biochar production:<\/strong> At an average 25 % pyrolysis yield, Slovakia could produce <strong>312,500 \u2013 406,250 tons of biochar per year<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>White areas:<\/strong> Successive stands on agricultural land (approx. 275,000 ha) represent another significant resource that could alleviate pressure on commercial forests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Technological and economic parameters of the system<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The transition to biochar production requires modern infrastructure with an emphasis on energy efficiency.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Energy self-sufficiency:<\/strong> During the process, it is created <strong>syngas<\/strong>, which contains 35 - 60 % of biomass energy. The system becomes energy autonomous after 1 - 1.5 hours of preheating (e.g. via LPG) by burning its own gases.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heat utilization:<\/strong> Legislation and standards require recovery <strong>at least 60 \u2013 70 % waste heat<\/strong>, which is ideal for drying input biomass below 20 % moisture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Investment analysis:<\/strong> For an industrial system (4 reactors, production ~45,000 t\/year) the estimated <strong>investment costs (CAPEX) approx. \u20ac44.1 million<\/strong> with operating costs (OPEX) of approximately \u20ac11.1 million per year. The payback period, including carbon credit income, ranges between <strong>2 to 5.5 years ago<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. Ecological risks of excessive deadwood removal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although biomass represents economic potential, its <strong>Over-extraction can irreversibly damage forest ecosystems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Soil depletion:<\/strong> The concentration of key nutrients in branches, needles and leaves is <strong>several times higher<\/strong> as in the trunk. The removal of thinnings and logging residues leads to nutritional degradation and a reduction in future forest productivity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biodiversity loss:<\/strong> Dead wood is an essential habitat for fungi, insects and birds. Intensive logging, which leads to homogeneous stands with a low proportion of dead biomass, drastically reduces species diversity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Soil carbon and erosion:<\/strong> Removing humus and stumps causes a loss of soil carbon. Conversely, leaving wood or applying biochar increases it. <strong>water retention by 300 %<\/strong> and reduces <strong>erosion by up to 65 %<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regulatory limits in Slovakia:<\/strong> The current stocks of dead wood in the Slovak Republic (20-30 m\u00b3\/ha) are above the international limit of 10 m\u00b3\/ha, which creates space for processing, but requires strict regionalization. In protected areas (e.g. CHV\u00da) it is recommended to leave at least <strong>10 trees per hectare<\/strong> for natural decomposition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5. Economic Transformation: Carbon Credits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Traditional logging in Slovakia generates revenue <strong>150 \u2013 300 \u20ac\/hectare<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New income:<\/strong> The sale of carbon credits (at prices of \u20ac30-50\/t CO2) can bring additional <strong>90 \u2013 300 \u20ac\/ha\/year<\/strong> without the need to increase mining.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate risks:<\/strong> The cost of damage caused by heat and pests in the European wood sector could reach up to <strong>\u20ac247 billion<\/strong>, which reduces the value of wood in stands by 42 %. Diversifying income through credits increases the financial resilience of forest owners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Converting disaster wood into biochar in line with the framework <strong>CRCF<\/strong> allows Slovakia to remediate forest damage and build a sustainable business model.
