The automotive industry is heavily reliant on steel as a key production material, with the top 16 carmakers estimated to have consumed between 39 million and 65 million tonnes of steel in 2022, the environmental group said in a report. Toyota, the world&#039;s leading automaker, consumed 6.3 million tons of steel in 2022 alone, followed by Volkswagen with 5.2 million tons and Hyundai-Kia with 5.2 million tons, according to a report released Thursday.
