But with news this week that the world\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/eldik.r.sp1-brevo.net\/mk\/cl\/f\/sh\/1t6Af4OiGsHKgQS9I0SK3I4Tgy2XKi\/QXQglqsEhDZh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is quickly spending its carbon budget<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to limit warming to 1.5\u00b0C, there is clearly no time to spare.<\/p>\n<p>What to do with it?\u00a0<strong>One obvious option is to accelerate work on fulfilling the promises that governments made back in 2023, namely<\/strong>\u00a0by justly transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems, tripling the share of renewable energy sources by 2030, and halting and reversing forest loss this decade.<\/p>\n<p>While negotiators gathered in rooms by the Rhine this morning, COP30 President Andr\u00e9 Aranha Corr\u00eaa do Lago issued\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eldik.r.sp1-brevo.net\/mk\/cl\/f\/sh\/1t6Af4OiGsHn18eZgMYFDY8J4n1H2m\/lKvomfZxTv1A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">his fourth open letter,<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><strong>in which he called on governments to deliver on what they had agreed to in the global assessment<\/strong>\u00a0, and proposed a new, more coherent approach to organizing the efforts of everyone else, including civil society and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>This, he wrote, can be seen as\u00a0<strong>&quot;globally designated contribution&quot; (GDC)<\/strong>\u00a0, which complements national climate action plans. This range of efforts will be developed under six key &quot;axes&quot;, including the transformation of energy, industry and transport; caring for forests and oceans; and greener food systems and agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>The COP30 team told reporters that it wants to focus on\u00a0<strong>to put into practice the approximately 400 initiatives announced at recent COP conferences,\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/eldik.r.sp1-brevo.net\/mk\/cl\/f\/sh\/7nVU1aA2nfsZpYqHU2PMYPMabhvyVbs\/VGAdxey1KHGp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and not to strive for more<\/a><\/span>\u00a0, reports our news editor Joe Loe.<\/p>\n<p>Climate policy experts welcomed the move but warned against assuming that the new, simplified approach &quot;will be sufficient to respond to the obvious crisis that we need to address in the negotiations.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><em>More on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">climatechangenews.com<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Negotiators in Bonn finally got to work, two days late, after a heated argument over the agenda that delayed discussions at the semi-annual UN climate talks.
