Among the various factors that adversely affected performance and posed challenges for luxury brands, they became a significant force Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards.

Looking ahead to 2025, brands face consumer skepticism and, in the United States, political risks as the new administration and state attorneys general target climate change and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. We see continued scrutiny of brands’ supply chains and workforces. Regulators and consumers, especially millennials and Generation Z, are demanding transparency throughout the production and distribution chainThey express concerns that brands are not living up to their claims about quality and sustainability.

Socially responsible supply chain statements were initially embraced by luxury brands and often presented as part of their heritage. These statements are now being introduced by lower-priced brands as a means of connecting with younger demographics. While the tension between fast fashion and sustainability is diminishing, the fashion industry still has a lot of work to do in this area.

Brands must demonstrate real change. False or misleading advertising regarding sustainability efforts (known as greenwashing) can lead to regulatory and consumer backlash, which far exceeds the expected benefits. As ESG reporting and substantive requirements are gradually introduced around the world, brands will need to increasingly focus on these issues.

ESG is also linked to changing sales and ownership models. The luxury second-hand market and platforms like The RealReal, Poshmark, and Vestiaire Collective have become more common. These models provide consumers with opportunities to buy high-end brands at more affordable prices and for the fashion industry, they represent a way to reduce their environmental impact and generate income from the circular economySimilarly, luxury clothing rental models have gained popularity in recent years. The success of these models reflects not only consumers’ appetite for luxury items at lower prices, but also shift in consumer habits due to sustainability concerns.

Addressing regulatory and consumer sustainability demands will remain important in 2025. Companies need to focus on these issues. Technologies such as AI can potentially be used to help develop ESG reporting. The topic of environment, climate change and ESG is key, as evidenced by the related topics and resources provided in the materials.

The fashion industry is likely to face both new and existing challenges in 2025. Agility and the ability to evolve with ever-changing consumer demands will continue to be key attributesthat fashion companies need to cope with the current situation. In addition to managing supply chain fluctuations and addressing regulatory and consumer sustainability requirements, luxury brands will also need to target geographic markets and consumer market segments where spending remains strong. Brands that can embrace change and closely monitor their customers’ preferences will be the winners in this market. Spring

After years of economic growth, the global luxury and fashion industry saw an overall decline in 2024.
