The construction sector is responsible for forty percent of total waste in the European Union. Tommaso Giomi, bioclimatic design expert<!--more-->, points out that if we were to put this waste in trucks, it would circle the Earth ten times. This waste is generated throughout the entire life cycle of buildings: from production, through construction, to their demise. Traditional construction today creates tomorrow&#039;s waste.<\/p>\n<p>Architects and engineers around the world, from the Dutch pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025 to experimental prototypes in Spain, are therefore rethinking design and construction to promote the reuse of materials and strengthen circularity. <strong>Buildings, unlike diamonds, are not eternal<\/strong>Sabine Oberhuber, co-founder of RAU Architects, a company specializing in circular construction, emphasizes that we are demolishing too quickly. Often, buildings are demolished not because they are unusable, but because they are written off on paper or it is cheaper to sell the land than to renovate, which creates absurd business models.<\/p>\n<p>The key to the new approach is <strong>flexibility<\/strong>. Accepting that buildings are not forever, it is paramount that they are adaptable to the changing needs of people and society. This principle inspired RAU Architects to design the Triodos Bank offices in the Netherlands, which are assembled using over 160,000 screws and are completely demountable, designed to be re-erected and repurposed for at least four future lifetimes.<\/p>\n<p>The prototype also promotes a similar philosophy <strong>multipurpose space<\/strong> developed on the outskirts of Barcelona as part of the EU RECONSTRUCT project. This prototype, about the size of a shipping container, is designed to be dismantled and reconstructed elsewhere for future use. All materials used are either reclaimed or developed from recycled content. For example, the concrete itself contains no virgin materials and is made entirely from waste, mainly olive stones. The reinforcement in the fa\u00e7ade panels is bio-based and recycled aggregates are used wherever possible. The fa\u00e7ade panels are designed for dismantling and are removable to allow the building\u2019s shape to be changed, demonstrating the adaptability of the structure.<\/p>\n<p>For this approach to be feasible, it is necessary <strong>digital ecosystem<\/strong>, which integrates material passports, blockchain and life cycle assessments. This system helps to optimize the use of resources. The same vision led to the creation of Madaster, an online register of materials and construction components, which shows, for example, the residual value of materials. The RECONSTRUCT project is also developing AI modules that can detect the presence, amount and type of usable raw materials in construction waste, thus preventing them from ending up in landfills.<\/p>\n<p>This approach is deeply rooted in centuries of wisdom, from which we have drifted under the illusion of infinite resources. History is full of examples of construction designed for reconstruction, such as the Colosseum or the buildings of the Edo period in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>However, shifting mindset is just one of many challenges. The biggest obstacle is <strong>regulation<\/strong> concerning reused materials. New products must undergo rigorous certification, while reused materials do not yet have a clear path to meet these standards. This causes confusion among authorities and reluctance among architects who fear regulatory issues. Another significant obstacle is the fragmented nature of the construction supply chain. The interconnection of designers, architects and manufacturers is complex, so digitalization is important to align all actors. To achieve real change in the industry, it is proposed to integrate circularity into building permit processes and tax energy and materials more than labor.
