The results were promising. Biochar made from organic waste is particularly successful in reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, researchers from Ohio State University in the US have found. The study, published in the Journal of Environmental Quality, highlights other benefits of biochar, including its ability to optimize soil. The authors hope that their research will help promote the commercial use and adoption of biochar in agriculture and forestry. Agriculture, forestry and land use account for more than 18 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, with crop burning accounting for 3.5 percent of that, according to our World in Data.

What is biochar?

Biochar is created when biomass, such as fallen tree branches and crop residues, is heated to 200-400°C with little or no oxygen in a process known as pyrolysis.
