Although wind supplies energy to the ocean in the range of large gyres, most of the kinetic energy is concentrated in mesoscales, which are a kind of "weather systems" of the ocean with dimensions of about 100 km. These mesoscale movements include eddy currents and voltage currents, which are of fundamental importance for ocean circulation and the climate system.

Despite the fact that wind is a major source of energy, it has a negative impact on mesoscale flows. damping effect, which is referred to as “eddy-killing.” This phenomenon modifies the supply of kinetic energy into the ocean, weakens ocean gyres and also affects large-scale currents such as the Gulf Stream and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Until recently, this wind-damping effect was thought to be primarily due to swirling movements, but new research shows that wind It also dampens tension movements..

This research presents a new theory that examines how wind affects ocean vorticity and stress. The results show that voltage and vorticity damping the wind is blowing to the same extent, but with with pronounced asymmetries depending on the polarity of these movements. For example, in subtropical regions winds dampen ocean cyclones and energize anticyclones outside of strong current areas. In subpolar regions wind has the opposite effect. Similar asymmetries are also observed in ocean tension, where subtropical convergent flow is muted in one direction and energized in the opposite direction.

The fundamental finding is that wind action consists of two components: induced and inherent wind stress gradients (WSG). Induced WSG are generated by ocean currents and always act against the movement of the ocean, thereby dampening it. On the contrary, inherent WSG result from existing wind gradients and can energize ocean currentsThese inherent wind gradients are related to atmospheric circulation and lead to asymmetric energizing ocean weather based on the polarity of eddy and stress currents. This asymmetry would not be apparent if the effect of wind based on the polarity of eddy and stress were not studied.

In conclusion, this study reveals that wind dampens ocean tension to the same extent as eddy current, but with significant asymmetric effectsThese asymmetries are caused by by the interaction between induced and inherent wind stress gradientsA better understanding of the energy transfer between wind and ocean is key to improving predictive models, especially those that focus on climate changesbecause many of these models cannot capture meso-scalar movementsThis research provides A new perspective on ocean weather dynamics and emphasizes the importance of considering the asymmetric effect of wind on ocean processes. Spring

Glossary of key terms

Vorticity: The rate of rotation of a fluid, defined as the rotation of the flow velocity.
