The aim is <strong>to slow down or stop<\/strong> the process of climate change and reduce its negative impacts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of mitigation measures:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Increasing the use of renewable energy sources<\/strong> (solar, wind, hydropower)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increasing energy efficiency<\/strong> buildings, transport and industry<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reducing deforestation and promoting afforestation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Development and deployment of carbon capture and storage technologies<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Adaptation to climate change<\/strong> focuses on <strong>adaptation to ongoing and expected climate change<\/strong>The goal is <strong>reduce vulnerability<\/strong> against the negative impacts of climate change and <strong>to take advantage of any opportunities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of adaptation measures:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Construction of flood barriers and coastal protection against rising sea levels<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Implementation of early warning systems for extreme weather events<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Growing more resilient crops and implementing adaptation strategies in agriculture<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Infrastructure adaptation<\/strong> (e.g. bridges, roads, buildings) <strong>changed climate conditions<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Improving water resources management systems<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is important to emphasize that <strong>Mitigation and adaptation are complementary strategies<\/strong>which is necessary <strong>implement together<\/strong>. Mitigation of climate change will reduce the magnitude of future changes and thus reduce the need for adaptation. However, adaptation is essential to address the already existing and unavoidable impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The publication \u201cData for Climate Action\u201d highlights the role of national statistical offices (NSOs) in both of these areas. NSOs can provide data and analysis to monitor greenhouse gas emissions and assess the effectiveness of mitigation measures.
