With each passing day, climate change is becoming a topic of global importance. Recently, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that the world is only a few tenths of a degree away from the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The IPCC stated that there are multiple, feasible and effective options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to human-induced climate change. According to a BBC report on Sunday (21 May), United Nations (UN) scientists are clear that cutting greenhouse gas emissions alone would not be enough to halt dangerous levels of warming. They said it would be necessary to remove carbon dioxide - to actively remove it from the atmosphere. Now, a process called "enhanced rock weathering" could help cool our overheating planet. What is enhanced rock weathering? Enhanced rock weathering is a natural carbon removal technology that permanently removes carbon dioxide (CO\u2082) from the atmosphere. UNDO, a company that improves rock weathering, said the process has been going on for millions of years, but the company is speeding it up. "For millions of years, carbon dioxide combined with rainwater to form carbonic acid. When this diluted acid hits mountains, forests and grasslands, the CO\u2082 interacts with rocks and soil, mineralizes and is safely stored as carbonate,\u201d UNDO states on its website.
