{"id":31369,"date":"2024-10-17T20:09:55","date_gmt":"2024-10-17T18:09:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.co2news.sk\/?p=31369"},"modified":"2024-10-17T20:10:57","modified_gmt":"2024-10-17T18:10:57","slug":"digital-carbon-footprint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.co2news.sk\/en\/2024\/10\/17\/digital-carbon-footprint\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital carbon footprint"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The digital carbon footprint is becoming an increasingly significant part of total greenhouse gas emissions, especially in relation to the rapidly growing use of digital technologies and internet services. <!--more-->This footprint is expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) and includes multiple aspects, from the production of digital devices to the daily use of email and social media such as Facebook and TikTok.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Production and Operation of Digital Devices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The production of smartphones, computers and various electronic devices is an energy-intensive process that contributes to high CO2e emissions. For example, the production of a single smartphone can release around 50 kg of CO2e, while a laptop can reach up to 300 kg of CO2e. These devices also consume energy during their operation \u2013 the average laptop emits around 0.5 kg of CO2e during 8 hours of use. Given the origin of the electricity and the efficiency of the technologies used, these values can be even higher.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Data Centers and Network Infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Data centers, which store and process data for internet services, as well as the global network infrastructure, play a key role in the digital carbon footprint. These centers are responsible for approximately 200 million tons of CO2e per year, or about 0.3% of global emissions, with much of the energy used to cool servers. Data transmission over fiber optics and mobile networks also contributes approximately 1\u20131.5% of global CO2e emissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social Media and Electronic Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everyday activities such as sending emails and using social media leave a significant digital carbon footprint. The average email without an attachment produces around 4g of CO2e, while an email with an attachment can be as much as 50g of CO2e. Using Facebook for 10 minutes produces around 5g of CO2e, while a minute spent on TikTok can contribute several grams of CO2e, especially for video content. News and streaming platforms such as YouTube and Netflix can be even more energy-intensive \u2013 an hour of HD video can produce 300-400g of CO2e. Facebook remains the top social platform, with 3.03 billion users worldwide, followed by YouTube, WhatsApp and Instagram with over 2 billion users, while TikTok exceeds 1 billion. People spend an average of 2 hours and 23 minutes a day on social media.<\/p>\n<p>For another illustration, consider Chat GPT, a well-known AI model that produces approximately 8.4 tons of carbon dioxide annually\u2014twice the amount emitted by an individual (4 tons). That\u2019s because training such large language models can consume thousands of megawatt-hours of electricity, resulting in hundreds of tons of carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>By 2040, the information and communications technology (ICT) sector is expected to contribute 14 percent to global emissions, with communications networks and data centers being the main drivers.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, it becomes imperative to explore pragmatic solutions to minimize the digital carbon footprint while continuing to reap the benefits of technological advancements. First and foremost, developers and researchers must prioritize building AI models that are less energy-intensive. This can be achieved by optimizing hardware and ensuring that AI systems require fewer computing resources without compromising performance.<\/p>\n<p>Government and technology centers should focus on investing in energy-efficient data centers, such as developing green data centers that are powered by renewable energy sources such as hydro, solar, and wind.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to raise awareness about the environmental impact of excessive social media use. As key drivers of online trends, influencers have the power to shape consumer behavior by raising awareness or launching digital minimalism campaigns that encourage mindful online activities.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, regulators must play a key role in creating and implementing guidelines that promote sustainable practices and accountability for all relevant stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies for Reducing Your Digital Carbon Footprint<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are several steps you can take to reduce your digital carbon footprint that can have a significant impact. These include:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Energy efficiency<\/strong>: Selecting more energy-efficient devices and optimizing software.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Green energy:<\/strong> Support for data centers that use renewable energy sources.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Extending the life of equipment:<\/strong> Repair and reuse of existing equipment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Reasonable use:<\/strong> Minimizing unnecessary emails and optimizing the quality of video streams.<\/p>\n<p>These measures can make a significant contribution to reducing our carbon footprint not only on an individual but also a global level. Given our increasing dependence on the digital world, it is important to take these steps seriously in the global effort to mitigate climate change.
