That&#039;s the highest number on record for the first quarter.\u00a0<\/span><span>The increase was driven by an economic recovery following the end of China&#039;s zero-Covid policy, economic stimulus measures and weak hydropower production<\/span><span> as a result of the ongoing drought, the Helsinki-based think tank said.\u00a0<\/span><span>&quot;Looking ahead to the rest of the year, the government&#039;s focus on economic growth means China&#039;s emissions are likely to reach an all-time high in 2023 and surpass the previous peak in 2021,&quot; CREA analysts Lauri Myllyvirta and Qi Qin said.\u00a0<\/span><span>But emissions could soon peak as China accelerates its push for clean energy and installs a record amount of solar and wind power capacity, analysts warned.\u00a0<\/span><span>&quot;The rapid expansion of low-carbon energy, if sustained, could allow emissions to peak and enter structural decline once the post-Covid recovery takes place,&quot; they said. China&#039;s economy rebounded in the first quarter of 2023, with GDP growth accelerating to 4.5%, according to official statistics released last month.
