The scientific consensus clearly shows that human activity, especially the burning of fossil fuels, is the main driver climate change. Despite this alarming fact, awareness of climate change in Slovakia is still low. This article provides an overview of the key facts.

1. Global warming and its consequences

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the global temperature has increased by approximately 1.2°C since the pre-Industrial Revolution. This rise in temperature has far-reaching consequences, including extreme weather events, loss of biodiversity and rising sea levels.

2. Climatic changes in Slovakia

The consequences of climate change are also observable in Slovakia. Research indicates increased temperatures, more frequent droughts, changes in precipitation patterns, and an increased frequency of extreme weather events such as flooding and severe storms. For example, the average annual temperature in Slovakia has increased by approximately 1.1°C over the last century.

3. Low public awareness

Despite these warning signs, surveys show that a large part of the Slovak public still does not have enough information about the causes and consequences of climate change. According to a 2022 survey by the Focus organization, only 35% Slovaks consider climate change a serious problem that requires an urgent solution.

4. Educational programs and media

One of the reasons for low awareness is the lack of educational programs and insufficient coverage of this topic in the national media. Some schools in Slovakia are already starting to incorporate climate change topics into their curricula, but these initiatives are still in their early stages. The media rarely provide deeper context and mostly focus on sensationalism and short-term events.

5. The role of the government and legislation

The Slovak government has adopted a number of measures to mitigate climate change, for example through the Slovak Recovery and Resilience Plan, which also includes green investments. However, the implementation of these measures often lags behind the planned pace and the public is often unaware of these initiatives.

6. Possible solutions

To increase awareness, it is necessary to strengthen educational programs in schools, increase the coverage of climate change in the media, and improve communication between the government and experts with the public. NGOs and local communities can also play a key role by organizing information campaigns and events.

Climate change is a complex and urgent problem that requires wider public awareness. In Slovakia, this level of awareness is still low, which can hinder effective solutions. Increasing education and awareness is a key step for society to effectively face the challenges that climate change brings.
