The 2040 climate target announcement was published on 6 February 2024. The public consultation showed strong support for accelerating climate change. The European Scientific Advisory Committee on Climate Change has recommended a reduction in emissions of 90-95 % by 2040 and a carbon budget of 11-14 Gt CO2 equivalents for 2030-2050. The EESC will evaluate this communication and provide an opinion on it.
