That&#039;s because the future trajectory of nitrogen will differ from that of other plant growth factors in the coming decades, according to a new study. Soil carbon sequesters a third of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. To predict how carbon sequestration might change in the coming years, scientists need to predict how plant biomass will grow or shrink, a difficult task. One factor that affects plant growth is carbon dioxide itself, CO<sub>2.\u00a0 <\/sub>WHAT<sub>2<\/sub> kicks plants into overdrive with photosynthesis in an effect called CO<sub>2<\/sub> fertilization, which has resulted in global \u201cgreening\u201d over the past few decades. But atmospheric carbon is far from the only factor affecting plant growth. Nitrogen from fertilizers, agriculture, and fossil fuels also has an impact. Yet models of the Earth\u2019s carbon sink, called terrestrial biosphere models, only include nitrogen about half the time. In a new study published in <i>Geophysical Research Letters<\/i> Kou-Giesbrecht and Arora are testing how including or omitting nitrogen affects model projections. The researchers compared two models of the Earth\u2019s biosphere, called CLASSIC-CN and CLASSIC-C. The first includes nitrogen and the second does not. They tested whether each model could accurately predict historical carbon sinks, and then extrapolated the models to future scenarios. Specifically, they applied the models to three of five shared socioeconomic pathways that represent a range of climate and societal options that could play out over the remainder of the 21st century. Looking back in time, both models could accurately predict historical Earth\u2019s carbon sinks. However, when predicting future carbon sequestration, the two models diverged. The carbon-only model overestimated Earth\u2019s carbon sink. This is because it combines the fertilizing effect of nitrogen with carbon dioxide. In the future, when carbon dioxide levels exceed atmospheric nitrogen inputs and nitrogen fertilization, the model also predicts how much plant growth, and therefore carbon sequestration, may occur. The difference is particularly pronounced in the pathway involving the highest increase in atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub> , with the nitrogen-inclusive model predicting up to 64 % lower carbon sequestration than the carbon-only model by the end of the century.
