These included all bisphenols, the most dangerous flame retardants and the increasingly controversial PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) chemicals.\u00a0<\/span><span>Also known as \u201cforever chemicals,\u201d PFAS formulations accumulate in the natural environment, taking hundreds of years\u2014or longer\u2014to break down. They were used so ubiquitously over the past century that one U.S. government study found them in the bloodstream of nearly all Americans.<\/span><span>, while this year&#039;s survey recorded 17,000 contaminated sites in Europe <\/span><span>and 2,100 hotspots.\u00a0<\/span><span>The restrictions plan was introduced as a temporary measure to protect the public and nature while the European Commission completes an update of its comprehensive Reach programme (which centrally collects data on modern synthetic chemicals and sets rules for their management).\u00a0<\/span><span>But Reach has been delayed, and the commission has so far used the plan to implement bans for only 14 chemical groups, only two of which appear to be impervious, according to a joint report by green rights group ClientEarth and the European Environment Agency.\u00a0<\/span><span>H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Duguy, legal and policy advisor at ClientEarth, said the delayed action highlights \u201cthe failure of the EU\u2019s gradual approach to chemical bans. This approach means that people and our environment are not protected from the most harmful chemicals. This needs to change now.
