The third largest criminal activity after drug trafficking and counterfeiting, it is growing by five to seven percent every year. LIFE SWEAP is leading the fight against this growing threat.<\/p>\n<p>From wildlife smuggling to illegal waste dumping, environmental crime has quickly become one of Europe&#039;s biggest headaches.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a class=\"ecl-link\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/infographics\/eu-fight-environmental-crime-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data from the Council of the European Union<\/a><button class=\"wt-unselected wt-laco wt-laco--button\" title=\"Search for available translations\" type=\"button\" aria-controls=\"laco-modal\"><\/button><\/span>shows that in 2022 alone, police across Europe seized almost 350,000 tonnes of illegal waste and around \u20ac15 million in property related to environmental crime<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a class=\"ecl-link--icon ecl-link--icon-after\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sweap.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"ecl-link__label\">LIFE SWEAP<\/span><\/a><\/span> \u00a0was set up in 2018 to strengthen training for law enforcement agencies fighting illegal waste trade across the EU. \u201cChemicals and waste such as pesticides, ozone-depleting substances, plastic waste and e-waste have a serious impact on our water, soil, air and ultimately our health,\u201d says Nancy Isarin, Senior Manager for Communications and Networking at LIFE SWEAP. \u201cStrong and capable law enforcement authorities at borders are key to preventing the negative impacts of the illegal trade in these commodities.\u201d (<em>More on <a href=\"https:\/\/cinea.ec.europa.eu\/news-events\/news\/life-sweap-wastes-no-time-preventing-environmental-crime-2024-04-04_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">cinea.ec.europa.eu<\/span><\/a>)<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Environmental crime is one of Europe\u2019s biggest challenges.
