As reported in Environmental Science & Technology Letters , boiling and filtering tap water containing calcium could help remove nearly 90 % of nanoplastics and microplastics present.

Contamination of water supplies with nanoplastics and microplastics (NMP), which can be as small as a thousandth of a millimeter or as large as 5 millimeters in diameter, is becoming increasingly common. The effects of these particles on human health are still being studied, although current studies suggest that their ingestion could affect the gut microbiome. Some advanced drinking water filtration systems capture NMP, but simple, inexpensive methods are needed to significantly reduce human plastic consumption. So Zhanjun Li, Eddy Zeng and colleagues wanted to see if boiling could be an effective method for removing NMP from both hard and soft tap water.
