Earlier this year, the UK's Met Office forecast that the average global temperature in 2023 would be 1.46\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels, making it the warmest year on record, 0.17\u00b0C above the previous record set in 2016.<\/p>\n

Shortly after this announcement, however, the Met Office also predicted a wave of cold Arctic air for several days, bringing sub-zero temperatures, snow and ice to many parts of the UK. When winter arrived, temperatures dropped to -14\u00b0C in the Scottish Highlands and -11\u00b0C even in England.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ten days later, a village in the Scottish Highlands reached\u00a0<\/span>pleasant 19.9 \u00b0C<\/span>\u00a0, the warmest January temperature ever recorded anywhere in the UK \u2013 by a full degree Celsius. That might seem more in line with the global warming trend. But just ten days after that record heat, much of the UK was once again hit by unusually\u00a0<\/span>cold and snowy weather<\/span>\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n
