This revised directive\u00a0 <\/span><strong><span>substantially\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><span>will strengthen the protection of human health and the environment against the harmful discharge of municipal wastewater<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0. It will also lead to\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>cleaner rivers, lakes, groundwater and seas<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0throughout Europe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Thanks to the new measures, more nutrients will be removed from urban wastewater and new standards will be applied to micropollutants. The Directive will now apply to a wider number of areas as it will also apply to\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>smaller agglomerations from 1,000 inhabitants<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>&quot;polluter pays&quot; principle<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0the new law will ensure that the cost of this protection is partially covered by the responsible industry, rather than water charges or the public budget.
