That&#039;s not just a problem for investors who follow them. As Norway&#039;s giant sovereign fund Norges says, imperfect sustainability indicators worry everyone else. Not all big investors follow the ESG ratings assigned by companies like MSCI, S&amp;P Global and Morningstar&#039;s Sustainalytics. Most choose from the wealth of data on offer and integrate the information into their own valuation frameworks. But ratings still move a lot of money. Funds with $121 billion in assets have signed up to the UN Principles for Responsible Investment, pledging to take ESG issues into account when deciding where to invest. Many of them use third-party ratings. Smaller investors with less capacity for independent analysis tend to rely on ESG ratings or invest in products and strategies built on them.
