The answer is simple. If the world is warming, why is it so cold? It sounds paradoxical, but the reason is that climate change and weather patterns are not the same thing. We explain the difference. What is climate? When people talk about climate and the environment, they are talking about gradual changes in temperatures and weather patterns over time. This time frame usually covers decades or centuries, not hourly changes in daily weather forecasts. Climate change can be related to natural causes. For example, changes in solar activity or volcanic eruptions, such as the eruption of Indonesia's Mount Tambora in April 1815. Ash and gases from this massive explosion blocked sunlight around the world and caused a temporary drop in average global temperatures of up to 3 degrees Celsius. Heavy snowfall and frost hit parts of Western Europe and North America in June, July, and August of 1816, the infamous "year without a summer." But most of the recent changes in the world's climate are due to us humans and our way of life. Over the past 200 years, increasing amounts of greenhouse gas emissions—mainly carbon dioxide and methane—from transportation, agriculture, heating, and other human activities have accumulated in the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases trap heat and gradually warm the planet.
