Record levels of greenhouse gases have caused \u201cplanetary-scale changes in land, ocean and atmosphere.\u201d The organization says its report, published\u00a0<strong>before this year&#039;s\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Mother Earth Day<\/strong>, echoes the call by UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres for &quot;<strong>deeper and faster emission reductions<\/strong>\u00a0with the aim of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius&quot;, as well as &quot;<strong>massively increased investments\u00a0<\/strong>into adaptation and resilience, especially for the most vulnerable countries and communities that did the least to cause the crisis.\u201d WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas said that amid rising greenhouse gas emissions and a changing climate, \u201cpeople around the world\u00a0<strong>continues to be seriously affected by extreme weather and climate events<\/strong>&quot;. He stressed that last year, &quot;persistent drought in East Africa, record rainfall in Pakistan and record heat waves in China and Europe affected tens of millions of people,\u00a0<strong>caused food insecurity, fueled mass migration, and cost billions of dollars\u00a0<\/strong>in losses and damages\u201d. The WMO stresses the importance of investing in climate monitoring and early warning systems to help mitigate the humanitarian consequences of extreme weather.
