Emissions have grown exponentially since the 1950s, when oil became central to the world economy and geopolitics. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global annual carbon emissions have increased sixfold over the past 70 years, with the oil and gas industry being the main contributor. Following the 2015 Paris Agreement, the oil and gas industry is under pressure to mitigate its carbon footprint, potentially driving a clean energy transition. GlobalData conducted a survey between November and December 2023 to assess how oil and gas companies are doing in their efforts to combat climate change. About 40% of respondents said the industry had done nothing. They believed that despite several statements by oil companies about reducing emissions, almost no decisive action had been taken. Oil production has increased by more than 10% in the past decade to meet global demand.
