Scientists suggest that preventing extinctions may take longer than previously thought, so urgent action is needed to prevent global biodiversity targets from becoming unattainable. The researchers found that previous modelling largely neglected the time lag of decades before the impact of factors such as climate change and habitat loss becomes apparent. The finding suggests that the world may be closer to the biodiversity loss abyss than previously thought. \u201cFor large mammals and birds, we have seen delayed effects of up to 40 years,\u201d Dr Freeman told BBC News. \u201cAnd that means the longer we wait to take action, the longer it will take before we see any response.\u201d Despite these sobering findings, research also suggests that immediate action on issues such as unsustainable hunting and overexploitation of natural resources can bring immediate and far-reaching benefits. The urgency of the situation is clear, with more plant and animal populations now at risk of extinction than at any time in human history. In a bid to tackle this biodiversity crisis, 188 governments, including the UK, signed a landmark agreement in December committing to global targets by 2030. These targets range from halving global food waste to phasing out subsidies that negatively impact biodiversity.
