Through the European Green Deal, the EU is committed to maintaining a healthy planet and aims to become the world's first carbon-neutral continent by 2050. Despite this ambition and the Paris Agreement's goal of keeping global warming well below 2°C above pre-industrial temperatures, greenhouse gas emissions are still rising worldwide. Global temperatures are currently around 1°C above pre-industrial levels and, without adequate mitigation strategies, global warming could reach 3°C or more by the end of this century. As part of the European Green Deal, the European Commission has announced the adoption of a new, more ambitious EU strategy for adaptation to climate change. It has also been recognised in the Commission's proposal for an EU climate law as an essential part of efforts to increase the EU's climate ambition for 2030 and 2050, as climate change will continue to cause significant stress issues in Europe and beyond, despite mitigation efforts. An open public consultation to inform the draft of the new strategy (expected to be adopted by the end of 2020 or early 2021) will run until mid-August. The initial impact assessment of the strategy is also available for consultation and feedback. The PESETA IV study aims to better understand the effects of climate change on Europe across a number of sectors with a climate impact and how these effects could be prevented by climate change mitigation and adaptation policies.

Climate change is one of the greatest threats to humanity, seriously affecting people and nature.
