The three-day event covered all areas of science education and included 246 booths and dozens of sessions and presentations. The next day, a teacher alerted NSTA staff that the CO2 Coalition was distributing a comic book about \u201cSimon, the Solar-Powered Cat.\u201d The main message of the comic book was that CO2 is the \u201cmiracle molecule\u201d that powers life on Earth because it is part of the photosynthesis process in plants. CO2 helps plants grow, but it misses the point that the overwhelming scientific evidence confirms that human emissions of carbon and other greenhouse gases are warming the planet at an alarming rate, seriously harming both humans and nature. \u201cIt\u2019s like talking about cigarettes and all you\u2019re talking about is how cool you look,\u201d said Professor Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University, who first reported the story in The Washington Post.<\/p>\n
