If it were to melt completely due to global warming, global sea levels would rise by about seven meters. The problem is that scientists do not know how fast the ice sheet can melt. In a new study, scientists have identified several tipping points that could occur based on carbon emissions.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vosveteit.zoznam.sk\/antarktida-celi-rovnakemu-problemu-ako-gronsko-takto-ovplyvnuje-globalne-oteplovanie-presun-ladovcov-v-regione\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greenlandic<\/a>\u00a0continental ice sheet to exceed, reports the AGU portal. If the ice sheet were to exceed the tipping point, the changes would be permanent regardless of how the situation develops. The authors explain that releasing 1,000 gigatons of carbon into the atmosphere would cause the southern part of the continental ice sheet to melt. If we release 2,000 gigatons of carbon emissions into the atmosphere, we would lose almost the entire continental ice sheet permanently. Humanity has already released 500 gigatons of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Scientists warn that we are halfway to the first tipping point. The continental ice sheet in Greenland is already melting today. Between 2003 and 2016, it lost approximately 255 gigatons of ice per year. Until now, melting has occurred mainly in the southern part of the continental ice sheet. The rate of melting depends on water and air temperatures, but also on precipitation, ocean currents and other factors. They all interact in complex ways, making it difficult for researchers to predict how the situation will develop. In previous studies, scientists have found that if global temperatures rise by anywhere between one and three degrees Celsius, the Greenland ice sheet will begin to melt irreversibly. In the new study, however, the researchers tried to describe the changes in the ice sheet a little more clearly. For the first time, the authors used a comprehensive model of the entire planet that included all climate processes.
