MONTE CIMONE, Italy, April 3 (TASR) - Monte Cimone, a popular ski resort in the Italian Apennines, invested 5 million euros in artificial snowmaking ahead of the winter season in an effort to counter the effects of global warming. The money was largely wasted. The snow cannon proved useless because the water droplets they shoot into the air need freezing weather to fall to the ground as snow, and temperatures never dropped below zero Celsius (32 Fahrenheit) until mid-January. "The lifts were closed, ski instructors and seasonal workers had nothing to do and we lost 40 million euros in revenue for the entire season," said Luciano Magnani, head of the local consortium of ski operators. "It was the first time in 40 years that we were closed during the Christmas holidays."
