According to the British University of East Anglia, in 2040 the number of cases of Vibrio vulnificus will double compared to today. Currently, about 80,000 Americans become infected with the bacteria each year, although the number is expected to be much higher. As a result, it will occur in every state on the East Coast of the United States, and rising sea levels could push it further inland. The bacteria causes watery diarrhea as well as abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever and chills. A new scientific study states: \u201cCombined with the growing number of elderly people, the number of cases may double annually. \u201cBy 2081\u20132100, V. vulnificus infections may occur in every eastern US state under moderate to high future emissions and warming. \u201cOf particular concern is V. vulnificus infection, which can appear with seawater exposure through small skin lesions and can rapidly become necrotic, requiring urgent surgical removal of tissue or limb amputation in approximately 10 % cases. "V. vulnificus is the most pathogenic of the Vibrio genus: mortality from wound infection reaches up to 18 % if deaths occur already 48 hours after exposure. \u201d In addition to causing approximately 100 cases per year in the US, the economic burden of wound infections caused by V. vulnificus is estimated to be over $28 million\/year.
