Careful removal of carbon

Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is undoubtedly an indispensable part of climate action at various levels. In the near future, CDR will contribute to mitigation efforts, although the magnitude of its impact is not as great as that of emissions reductions. However, in net zero or even net negative phases, CDR will play a vital role in compensating for hard-to-reduce residual emissions. Given the likely inevitable temperature overshoot, rapid and large-scale CDR deployment appears to be becoming the default in many mitigation pathway scenarios, both global and national. However, there is a growing view in the climate community that more caution should be exercised when considering the role of CDR in the climate action portfolio. Researchers, policy makers and civil society are beginning to express various concerns regarding its feasibility and risks. (More on nature.com)
