Our Earth has enjoyed an oxygen-rich atmosphere for a long time, but it wasn't always like that. Experts predict that in the future, the composition of Earth's atmosphere could approach a state similar to that before the Great Oxygen Event (GOE) about 2.4 billion years ago. This future atmosphere will likely have high levels of methane and low levels of oxygen. Although this change is still a long way off, when it does occur it is predicted to be rapid and represent a significant departure from the current composition of the atmosphere.
Oxygen could be in short supply
A 2021 study suggests that the subsequent depletion of atmospheric oxygen will have devastating consequences for life as we know it. This loss is expected to occur before the onset of wet greenhouse conditions in the Earth's climate system and widespread depletion of surface water. A drop in oxygen levels will make the planet uninhabitable for humans and most other oxygen-dependent life forms. (Philippe Ralla, more at futurezone.de)
