EU countries support targets to reduce truck CO2 emissions

European Union countries backed tougher CO2 emissions targets for heavy-duty trucks on Monday, requiring new trucks to cut their emissions by 90 % by 2040, but delayed a planned switch to electric city buses. .EU climate ministers agreed to back a proposed law on the issue, which would also require new trucks sold in the EU to have 45 % lower CO2 emissions by 2030 and 65 % lower CO2 emissions by 2035 compared to levels in 2019. They delayed a proposed 2035 target for all new city buses to have zero CO2 emissions after countries including France and Estonia said the 2030 deadline proposed by the European Commission was unrealistic. The proposed law, which the EU countries will now negotiate with the European Parliament, is aimed at launching investments to reduce CO2 emissions in the heavy commercial vehicle industry and expanding the production of electric vehicles, which some manufacturers have already committed to.
